2017 Agenda:

October 9 – Meeting in PeoriaBill Schulz will demo how to take 4 – 12″ square dowels and easily make an inside-out Christmas ornament that a beginning turner can understand and make. Bill is referencing an article in American Woodturner magazine, Dec, 2016, about ‘inside-out turning made easy’.

October 21 Turning Saturday 2017 hosted by the Lincoln Land Woodturners. Always a great turnout for these events supported by the three clubs. Don’t miss it…! Here are the Announcement and the Registration Form. Please send the completed form in asap but no later than October 6th, please. Registration starts at 8am and the program commences at 8.45am. November 10 & 11 – Pekin: Make sure you visit the Woodworkers Shop in Pekin (map) for their Open House. Get with Hod Bailey to sign up as a demonstrator for Friday and/or Saturday.

November 13 – Meeting in BloomingtonAll members are invited to bring their favorite tool or jig they have made (or modified) and share what they like about.

November 18Clay Foster Demo in Bloomington. Don’t miss Clay Foster who is a woodworker/woodturner with decades of experience. He has been active in turning symposiums around the world and a founding member of the AAW.  Clay will cover three topics for us during his day at our club: Low Tech Low Cost Surface Enhancement, Multiple Axis Vessel and Two Piece Hollow Vessel. December 11 – Meeting in Peoria – Our 6th annual winter potluck….. ?

 

2017 President’s Challenges
January/February, “Kitchen utensil”   Spoons, scoops, spurtles, spatulas, or ladles for example.
March/April, “Shop accessory” Your favorite shop/turning aid. Either hand made or purchased, but hand made is preferred. Chisel holder, sandpaper organizers, and hand made turning chisels for example.
May/June, “Embellished bowl”  Any size bowl that has some sort of mechanical embellishment. Textured, carved, burnt, split and reassembled, or added elements for example. Coloring does not count, you must modify the wood.
July/August “Weed pot” Any size vessel that could be used to display dried flowers. The opening must be less than 3/4” diameter. Vessel must be drilled but does not need to be hollow.
September/October “Dyed turning” Any wood turned object that has been colored. From pens to platters will be accepted.
November/December “Yo-yo” Self explanatory, extra credit for best demonstration. Either all wood, or purchased ball bearing hardware kit.

March 3 & 4Pekin: Make sure you visit the Woodworkers Shop in Pekin (map) for their Open House. The club will be demonstrating and it is a great opportunity to get in on the action. Very informal and always a good time. Get with Hod Bailey to sign up as a demonstrator for Friday and/or Saturday

March 13 – Meeting in BloomingtonMary Jo will talk about various supplies needed to do polymer clay work. She will demonstrate how to make a basic cane and use it in a pen blank. Finished pens will be shown as well. FYI: A ‘cane’ is a length of combined clay that is sliced and used to decorate.

March 25Pro Demo in Mendota, IL – Jason Swanson will perform an all-day demo featuring his Pepper Grinders, his signature staved blank construction and hand chased threads. Jason did a meeting demo for us 7 or 8 years ago.  Since then his popularity in the woodturning community has grown and he will demo at the AAW in Kansas City in June. Location: Frank Kobilsek’s workshop (map) at 149 N. 38th Rd. Mendota, IL – directions. Several logistical factors mandated this easy to find location. And…. April 10 – Meeting in Peoria Terry Quiram will demonstrate the use of various tools and color to produce decorative detail to enhance your turning.

May 8 – Meeting in Bloomington Terry Quiram will demonstrate 2 methods to turn a top.  He will also apply chatter work and color as demonstrated in the April meeting. Also, Bill Schulz will have a sign-up sheet for bringing your favorite dish to the July potluck.

June 12 – Meeting in PeoriaGreg Ferkol: Turning bone finials. Also, Bill Schulz will have a sign-up sheet for bringing your favorite dish to the July potluck.

June 15Andrew Potocnik Demo in Bloomington. Andrew is from Australia and will demonstrate for the Central Illinois Woodturners on Thursday, June 15th at 6:00pm.  This two hour plus, special session of the club will be held at our Bloomington meeting location Sprauge’s shop.  Andrew is an invited international Demonstrator for the 2017 AAW symposium in Kansas City.  He is a popular writer in turning magazines around the world including a feature article in the current AAW Journal. October 15 – Jason Clark Demo in Bloomington. Sign up sheet….. New in Chicago having recently moved from Phoenix, a woodturner with many years experience who has been active in Regional and National Turning expos.  Jason has been selected to demo at the 2017 AAW Symposium in Kansas City.  John will demo three projects for the CIW.  After warming up with some Multi-axis spindle work he will apply the multi-axis techniques to a lidded box.  What follows will be one piece each of his signature works a Torus hollow form and a Saturn Bowl.  Image a big hollow donut when you think of a Torus and the Saturn bowl is designed to allow the holder to twist and manipulate the bowl to provide different views and grain alignment.  His Saturn bowl is just plain cool! Jason comes highly recommended by a CIW member and his peers in the woodturning community.

October 29 Turning Saturday. If you have not registered, please don’t let this stop you from joining us. Simply let Jerry know you will attend via email or phone and bring this form with you on Saturday. Registration and Setup 7.30 to 8.30am. Welcome 8.30 to 8.45am. Session 1 starts 8.45am….!! Details in the rotation schedule. Our friends from the Flatland Woodturners will be hosting this year’s event in Champaign (map). Expect this to be another great event. December 12 – Meeting in Peoria beginning at 6:30 pm – Our 5th annual winter potluck….. 🙂  An event everyone is looking forward to….Thank you Mark Padesky for again organizing it. Also, the President’s Challenge* will not only be the Christmas Ornament but…. We will also have the annual raffle for those contributing to all President’s Challenges.

 * The President’s challenge is a randomly selected project. It allows the individual club member to interpret a common theme. Each will be held in Bloomington as well as Peoria the following month. Participation will be rewarded through drawings after each project as well as an annual raffle for those contributing to all challenges

 

2015 in review

January 12 – Meeting in Bloomington beginning at 6:30 pm – Again…. Tom Stegall on Principals of Good Design / Form. This time in Bloomington. This will be primarily a lecture, but has been very popular in the past. It involves providing a critique of work brought in, giving food for thought on how a turner can improve the visual aspects of their turned items. MEMBERS MUST BRING IN ONE ITEM FOR CRITIQUE

February 9 – Meeting in Peoria beginning at 6:30 pm – Richard Coers on hollowing from start to finish: Information on vessel design and tool considerations. Optical (camera based) vs. laser guide systems, homemade vs purchased systems, hollowing tools, hollowing techniques and random orbit sanders off the lathe vs. lathe sanding for final sanding.

Febuary 14 – Peoria 9am to 4pm – Pro turner program with Craig Lossing. Craig will start with a few skill building projects before demonstrating his signature style of pierced and elevated hollow forms. Please see the sign up sheet for details on cost and how to register.

March 6/7 – Some of our members will be demonstrating at the Woodworker’s Shop (map) in Pekin during the ‘Wood Expo.’ Friday: 8am-5pm, Saturday: 8am-2pm

March 9 – Meeting in Bloomington beginning at 6:30 pm – Jerry Sievers: Turn an end grain box

April 13 – Meeting in Peoria beginning at 6:30 pm – Dixie Biggs : Need Some Relief?  Relief carving techniques using a rotary power carver; the techniques I use to create my “leaf wrapped” vessels, from layout to detailed carving; Discussion will include tools, bits and sanding tips.

April 17/18 – 8th Annual Midwest Penturners Gathering. (Editor’s note: A MUST if you are interested in anything related to pen turning at all…..!)  It will take place a the Carpenter’s Local 44 Union Hall (map) and will tentatively run form 1-4pm on Friday and 9am-4pm on Saturday. Al will be presenting a number of proposed changes to our monthly meeting structure and the officers would like to have your feedback. AND…..Thin Wall Turning with Thomas Stegall. Various methods for turning uniformly thin bowls, and hollow forms which allows for piercing, carving and a delicate appearance
